Technology innovation and cycling with Telefónica Tech

Telefónica Tech collaborates with Movistar Teams technical staff and Telefónicas global Sponsorship team to improve the performance of the cyclists and the achievements of Movistar Team.

Thanks to advanced data analysis, we apply the latest advances in Sports Science, IoT, Big Data and Machine Learning in the planning of training sessions and in the creation of analytical tools that provide additional knowledge about the teams results in competition.

  • A ride with Perico Delgado and Movistar Team

In a sport where mental and physical endurance are essential, the human factor is key to success, but through technology and data analytics we find that tiny percentage of extra performance that makes the difference in winning a big race.

  • The connected cyclist
During a major race, cyclists cover more than 3,000 km over three intense weeks. Each of them generates, on average, more than 3 million pieces of data.

Each cyclist carries a series of IoT sensors to capture this vast amount of information which will allow team managers to establish the best joint and individual strategy for each of them.

  • The data race
These IoT sensors send all the information to a device on the handlebars. It is a small computer with a built-in GPS.

At the end of each training session or competition, the cyclist connects the device to the internet and synchronises the data collected with our Cloud platform, on which the analysis tools adapted to each context (time trial stages, training sessions, stage planning, etc.) are deployed.

In this way, the technical team can access any data immediately and securely. This is where our work begins by resorting to our Big Data and advanced analytics platform, a proprietary and customised intelligence tool for the technical team to have at their disposal the results of the analyses and make data-driven decisions.

Cycling stage

The analysis

Different scenarios and applications can be found when analysing the data collected:

In most cases, cyclists and coaches live in different cities, so remote communication is essential.

Thanks to the Cloud synchronisation of data, coaches make daily schedules of training sessions and can check the results, readjusting training loads according to the approach to the set performance targets.

Training planning is optimised by integrating data analytics, so that the cyclist can reach their optimal fitness level right at the start of the competition in which they will be participating.

In multi-stage races, the data collected from the sensors is analysed together with the existing record to make an accurate interpretation of what happened in the days stage.

This analysis, through different reports and customised graphs, allows the team manager to make decisions for the next stages.

The team is constantly exploring and innovating with its professional equipment suppliers.

The aim is to improve technical aspects, related to driving, biomechanics, aerodynamics, physiology, among others, that improve the individual competitiveness of the cyclist. It is necessary to carry out tests for the adoption of a new element, where the configuration options are numerous.

In this case, Data Analytics is essential to contrast the improvement and recommend the adoption of these changes for competition.
