At Telefónica, we will work with Indra to deploy one of the two communications and security infrastructures that will underpin the European Central Bank's (ECB) future digital euro. The project will securely interconnect banks, fintech companies and payment service providers, facilitating access to the services planned from 2029 onwards.
Through Telefónica Global Solutions and Telefónica Tech, we will provide connectivity and Cybersecurity capabilities to help develop secure and resilient critical infrastructure for Europe.
The solution will combine an MPLS network, SD-WAN capabilities and specialist Cybersecurity services, including perimeter protection and penetration testing (pentesting). We will also bring our experience in protecting critical infrastructure and the capabilities of our Security Operations Centers (SOCs) to monitor, detect and respond to threats, and support recovery.
These capabilities will help safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of information, preserve service availability and strengthen the cyber resilience of the ecosystem. Indra, through Minsait, will provide platforms and services for APIs, identity, certificates and trust services.
We will deploy the infrastructure progressively across Europe, beginning with the Southern Region, using a distributed architecture designed for redundancy. To strengthen the availability of the digital euro, the ECB has awarded a contract for a second, complementary infrastructure with similar characteristics.
The contract will enter into force on 3 May 2027, run for 10 years and be worth at least €75 million, with the value potentially increasing if the ECB activates optional services.
