At Telefónica Tech, we worked with VMO2 on a project with the River Severn Partnership Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) to implement a 5G network with innovative use cases at Overbury Farm.
From Telefónica Tech, we have provided the Smart Agro solutions required by Overbury Farm, connected through VMO2's private 5G network.
Overbury Farms, a 1,600-hectare farm and leader in digital agriculture, uses connected tractors, IoT weather stations, and real-time data analytics.
The DSIT (Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology) has chosen the River Severn Catchment as one of the ten 5G innovation regions, showcasing the advantages of digitization in agriculture, water management, and the public sector.
The 5G solutions we provide from Telefónica Tech improve farm efficiency, animal welfare and decrease environmental impact. This includes:
- Pest observation with AI: connecting camera traps for beetles and deploying new ones for aphids and ladybugs. This will allow prompt action and reduce pesticides.
- Water level control: monitoring livestock and horses drinking troughs, optimizing time, and ensuring water supply.
- Fertilizer monitoring: monitors trigger leak alerts, quickly addressing them and reducing environmental impact and inspection time.
- Weather station: collecting soil moisture, wind speed, rain gauge, and temperature. This data is correlated with weather forecasts and disease modeling to support decision making.
This project demonstrates how digitization can transform agricultural management and promote a sustainable and efficient agricultural future.
