FinOps (Financial Operations)

What is FinOps?

FinOps, short for Financial Operations, is a framework and practice that brings technology, finance and business teams together to manage technology usage and the value it delivers to the business.

In cloud environments, it enables collaborative decision-making on resources and investments based on usage, cost and performance data, aligned with business objectives.

Why is FinOps important for businesses?

The flexibility of cloud services allows businesses to scale resources up or down as needed, but it can also make costs difficult to control. FinOps provides greater visibility into resource usage, helps identify underutilised resources and makes it easier to allocate costs across services, projects and business units.

The aim is to align cloud spending with business priorities and assess the value delivered by each investment, while also identifying opportunities to reduce costs.

How is FinOps applied in practice?

FinOps follows a continuous cycle of analysing, optimising and monitoring cloud usage. Key practices include resource tagging and cost allocation, budgeting and forecasting, adjusting resource capacity to match workload requirements (rightsizing) and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

It also uses metrics that link technology spending to resource usage and business value, enabling technology, finance and business teams to make more informed decisions together.

■ FinOps is about maximising the value of cloud resources, not just cutting costs.

How does FinOps relate to cloud governance?

FinOps brings cost, usage and business value considerations into cloud governance. These insights complement the policies governing resource usage, security and management that guide infrastructure and service decisions.

Bringing these practices together helps businesses assess resource and investment decisions based on cost, expected business value and the performance, security and agility requirements of their services.
