Human in the Loop

What is Human in the Loop?

Human in the Loop (HITL) is an AI approach in which people are actively involved in training, supervising or validating the decisions made by an AI system.

Rather than delegating decision-making entirely to a model, AI and people work together to improve accuracy, reduce risk and ensure that outcomes are appropriate for each context.

Why is human intervention still important?

As AI models become increasingly autonomous, so too does the need to ensure that their decisions are safe, explainable and aligned with business objectives. Human involvement makes it possible to validate complex situations, correct potential errors, identify bias and intervene when AI recommendations could have a significant impact on people, processes or critical assets.

How is it used in businesses?

The human-in-the-loop principle is applied across a wide range of business scenarios. In cybersecurity, for example, an AI-Native SOC can automate the analysis and prioritisation of alerts, while analysts validate the most critical actions.

In agentic AI environments, human oversight makes it possible to define operational boundaries and approve certain decisions before they are executed. It is also essential in regulated sectors, where organisations must ensure the traceability, accountability and regulatory compliance of AI systems.

■ AI can accelerate decision-making, but trust still depends on human oversight.
