GSMA's manifesto for Europe's digital transformation

April 4, 2024

The GSMA report New Rules for a New Era. Connecting Europe to 2030: A Mobile Industry Manifesto for Europe is a mobile industry manifesto for a connected Europe in 2030.

It sets out the need for new rules and policies in the European Union to drive connectivity and the mobile industry in the digital age. The purpose: to achieve a connected, competitive, digital, and green Europe by 2030.

It also highlights the importance of connectivity for economic growth, the green transition, digital inclusion, and Europe's strategic autonomy. To achieve this, it proposes specific measures in different areas, including:

  • The need to establish new rules and policies in the European Union to boost connectivity and the mobile industry in the digital era.
  • The importance of connectivity for economic growth, green transition, digital inclusion, and Europe's strategic autonomy.
  • The specific recommendations proposed in areas such as spectrum policy, market regulation, green transition, and digital empowerment.
  • The role of Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) in building more energy-efficient, secure, and customer-centric 5G networks.
  • The focus on technology innovation and the delivery of pan-European digital networks and services of the future.
  • The contribution of the mobile sector to reducing emissions and driving the adoption of clean technologies.
  • The key role of connectivity in bridging the digital divide and ensuring social cohesion by ensuring that "all citizens and businesses have access to digital services such as eGovernment."
  • The need to establish a new regulatory framework that enables long-term investment, recognizes the need for economies of scale and facilitates the rapid deployment of world-leading connectivity.
GSMA report underlines the importance of the mobile sector in driving the green transition, digital inclusion, and strengthening Europe's strategic self-reliance and resilience.

Here are two examples of our contribution to Industry 4.0

Gestamp

The GSMA report includes, among other examples, how Telefónica has implemented a use case of a factory connected with 5G technology in the industrial plant of Gestamp, in Barcelona, to test advanced technologies in Industry 4.0. In this case, the industrial machinery is connected with the new 5G technology to process data generated in real time thanks to Edge Computing.

Redeia

The report also covers our collaboration with Redeia. We are working with this company on a DLR (Dynamic Line Rating) system for a more efficient operation of the power grid. This solution optimizes the use of the electricity transmission grid by calculating the transmission capacity of the lines in real time to achieve a more efficient operation of the electricity grid.

DLR provides real-time power transmission capacity information for each line using IoT sensors, local weather stations, an advanced cloud platform, and AI and machine learning systems, allowing the system to operate dynamically using the capacity of the transmission grid without compromising its security.

Open Gateway to foster innovation and power pan-European digital networks

Open Gateway enables mobile operators to open their networks to developers and cloud service providers through standardized API interfaces. This initiative expands the possibilities and scope of any digital innovation, allowing business users to seamlessly connect to their nearest Edge Cloud and benefit from networks tailored to their latency and quality needs.

Open Gateway thus establishes itself as a fundamental tool to foster innovation and empower pan-European digital networks and future services, contributing significantly to Europe's positioning in the global technology race.
