We apply AI to detect unwanted loneliness in older people

Together with the City Council of Valladolid (Spain), we have implemented the Pergola Project, a proof of concept that uses AI to detect unwanted loneliness among the elderly. As part of the Plan Contigo, the pilot leverages vocal biomarkers to identify signs of isolation through speech analysis.

Through Telefónica Tech, in collaboration with AcceXible, we have developed a technological solution that analyzes citizens' emotional wellbeing based on responses to predefined questions asked by volunteers from the Cosocial Volunteer Bank. This technology is being used in call rounds targeting residents aged 70 to 80 in Valladolid's southern area during October and November 2025.

To ensure data privacy, the City Council has set up a secure space with computers and phones. The collected data is used to recommend specific activities to individuals identified as at risk, including sessions at Active Life Centers or cultural and nature-based experiences.

This project reflects our commitment to ethical and useful AI, which we are already applying in healthcare and social services to improve people’s lives.
