Leading the digitalisation of water management in Castilla y León through IoT and data

At Telefónica Tech, we will supply 175,000 smart meters with integrated NB-IoT connectivity for the comprehensive digitalisation of the water cycle promoted by the Regional Government of Castilla y León through SOMACYL. The initiative will replace the traditional manual meter-reading model with an automated, secure and continuous meter reading system designed to improve the management and distribution of water resources.

The contract, awarded to Telefónica, will run for more than 10 years and will include implementation, operation and maintenance services. Through our IoT technology and data analytics platform, both household and network meters will provide real-time information, improving the accuracy of service delivery and helping identify potential incidents or abnormal consumption patterns.

Our NB-IoT network, managed through the Kite platform, enables data transmission with low energy consumption and extensive indoor and outdoor coverage. In addition, the modular platform will integrate data from different meters and technologies, strengthening operational monitoring, incident management, traceability and advanced data analytics.

With this project, we help public administrations modernise essential services through connected, secure and data-driven solutions. We also contribute to more efficient, sustainable and transparent water management that is focused on citizens, applying digital technologies that improve operational continuity and enhance the responsiveness of critical infrastructure.
