At Telefónica Tech we have monitored summer tourism in Spain during the months from June to September 2024 using our Smart Steps platform. This has allowed us to gain several insights into tourist mobility, including domestic tourism within the country, inbound tourism from other regions, and outbound tourism of Spaniards traveling abroad.
During the four months analyzed, there were nearly 62 million domestic tourist trips, with a 5% increase in June and a 5.4% increase in September compared to the previous year, indicating an extension of the peak season. Regarding international tourism, we welcomed around 47 million visitors, 10% more than in 2023, with August marking the month with the highest influx of tourists in history.
The main sources of foreign tourists were the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, while destinations like the Balearic Islands and Alicante were the most visited. On the other hand, outbound tourism by Spaniards grew by 3%, with Portugal and France standing out as the favorite destinations.
These data reflect the effectiveness of Smart Steps in mobility analysis, providing valuable insights for the tourism sector, facilitating strategic planning, and promoting more sustainable tourism.
