The Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSIT-UPM) aimed to drive forward advanced research in mobility and bridge the gap between academic innovation and the private sector. To this end, it turned to Telefónica to deploy its advanced private 5G network.

The project marked a national milestone as it was the first deployment in Spain of a private network operating in millimetre-wave bands, the result of a collaboration to create a living laboratory that accelerates the industry of the future.

The new architecture combines campus-wide coverage with immediate data processing at the edge. This enables the secure validation of advanced technologies, such as drones or virtual reality, whilst ensuring maximum capacity and real-time responsiveness.

Case Study Highlights

The campus as a living laboratory

First national deployment of a private network in high-frequency bands, offering massive transmission capacity and immediate response.

Dedicated, secure, and flexible network

A strategic technological ecosystem to validate new commercial services, drive technology transfer and develop digital talent.

Seamless public-private transition

A controlled environment on campus, integrated with smart urban corridors, for testing and demonstrating innovative applications under real-world conditions.

Leadership in advanced connectivity

An infrastructure with a dedicated core for the university that prioritises data traffic and processes information locally, ensuring privacy.

University - business connection

Devices configured to switch automatically between the campus’s private network and Telefónica’s public network without interrupting service.

What they say about us

“The results achieved in this project prove the viability of using millimetre-wave bands in mobility scenarios, a key challenge faced by operators in the deployment of 5G and future 6G networks across demanding environments.”

José Ignacio Alonso, Professor at ETSIT-UPM responsible for the pilot deployment
