The Castile and León Public Infrastructure and Environment Company (SOMACYL) aimed to modernise the entire water cycle and achieve more efficient and sustainable management of water resources.

It entrusted Telefónica Tech with replacing the traditional manual meter reading model with an innovative, secure and continuous automated remote meter reading system. The project marks a milestone in the modernisation of essential services through the deployment of 175,000 smart meters with NB-IoT connectivity, managed centrally via the Kite platform.

This new infrastructure enables accurate data collected every hour in real-time, allowing incidents or abnormal consumption to be anticipated, and paving the way for data-driven predictive management models, thereby ensuring operational resilience.

Case Study Highlights

Automated and continuous remote meter reading

Replacing the manual meter reading model with an intelligent system that promotes a more efficient and transparent distribution and management of water resources.

Prediction and detection of anomalies

This allows water losses, leaks, and incidents to be identified at an early stage in real time, significantly improving the accuracy and quality of the service provided to the public.

Robust connectivity through NB-IoT network

The Kite platform centrally manages devices, ensuring low energy consumption and strong signal penetration in areas with poor coverage.
