Telefónica Tech and the Real Club Náutico de Palma will use a water drone to treat marine waste during the Copa del Rey regatta

We have launched a pilot project with the Real Club Náutico de Palma to help protect the marine environment during the Copa del Rey sailing regatta, taking place from July 26 to August 2. Our technology enables more efficient cleaning operations through a 100% electric aquatic drone connected via IoT, capable of collecting up to 500 kg of floating waste per day.

Alongside the drone, we are deploying advanced sensors to monitor microplastics in real time within the port. By combining optical and photonic technologies with AI, we can assess water quality and enhance cleanup operations.

The project also promotes a circular economy approach by storing the collected waste for recovery by local waste management company Tirme. This enables recycling and reuse, reducing the environmental impact compared to conventional marine cleanup methods.

Our IoT connectivity powers remote management of the drone and sensors, and also streams real-time data and images to a platform that supports the yacht club in making informed decisions. Through this initiative, we reaffirm our environmental commitment and demonstrate how technology can be a key ally in preserving marine ecosystems.
