The Valle de la Lengua Data Space (EDVAL) is a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the role of Spanish in the digital economy and in the development of Artificial Intelligence through a secure, governed, and interoperable environment for sharing and exploiting linguistic resources.

The project brings together public administrations, universities, research centres, businesses, and cultural institutions within a collaborative ecosystem that encourages the responsible reuse of data, whilst preserving information sovereignty and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Telefónica Tech has developed the technological infrastructure for the Data Space, providing capabilities in interoperability, architecture and data governance to facilitate the secure exchange of information. It also integrates the San Millán Spanish Spoken Corpus (COE San Millán), natural language processing and automatic speech recognition services, together with a data governance model.

Case Study Highlights

An institutional data space to encourage collaboration and the secure sharing of linguistic resources in Spanish

The Valle de la Lengua Data Space is an institutional initiative launched by the Foundation for the Transformation of La Rioja National Centre for Spanish-Language Industries (CNIE). The project creates a reliable framework for generating, sharing and adding value to linguistic data in Spanish, with common standards for governance, interoperability and quality that foster collaboration amongst stakeholders in the ecosystem and facilitate the responsible reuse of data.

Technical and semantic interoperability to facilitate the sharing of linguistic data between systems and sectors

The Data Space promotes technical and semantic interoperability through common standards that enable the exchange and reuse of linguistic data between different systems and sectors. This involves incorporating repositories of specialised terminology in Spanish, organised by subject areas such as medicine, engineering, law, education and public administration, which serve as a reference for the development of models, applications and digital solutions.

Continuous training of voice and linguistic AI models in Spanish

The Data Space facilitates the continuous training of voice models and linguistic artificial intelligence solutions in Spanish. Thanks to the incorporation of new validated data, it is possible to automatically update the systems, improve their accuracy and adapt them to different contexts, accents and language uses, ensuring the constant evolution of language- and voice-based technologies.

Spanish as a strategic asset in the new digital economy

The San Millán Oral Corpus of Spanish drives the creation of high-quality linguistic resources to train Artificial Intelligence models capable of understanding the linguistic, cultural and normative diversity of Spanish. This approach helps to consolidate Spanish as a native language in AI, driving research, innovation, and the development of new digital services.

Promoting the international reach of Spanish through a data space connected to the European ecosystem

The Data Space drives the internationalisation of Spanish-speaking companies and organisations through linguistic and semantic resources that enable content and communication models to be adapted to the European context. Its connection to strategic initiatives such as GAIA-X and the European Data Strategy also fosters a European data market based on innovation, cooperation and the development of new digital services.
