The 10 most relevant IoT developments of 2023: Telefónica and Sateliot's satellite IoT connectivity

In its article IoT 2023 in Review, IoT Analytics compiled the ten most significant advancements in the global field of IoT (Internet of Things) for 2023, a year marked by multiple challenges and significant strides in the development of advanced IoT connectivity.

The publication highlights our contribution in this field as we collaborated with Sateliot to successfully complete the first NB-IoT 5G connection via satellite in roaming. This breakthrough allowed us to integrate Telefónica's NB-IoT terrestrial networks with Sateliot's non-terrestrial networks (NTN) of low-orbit satellites.

Managed through Telefónica Tech's Kite platform, the connection provides global IoT connectivity as a backup in areas with intermittent or limited coverage, and also in areas without terrestrial coverage.

This significantly broadens the potential applications of IoT technology in sectors such as livestock and agriculture, natural resource and energy management, land and maritime logistics operations, infrastructure maintenance, preservation of natural spaces and the environment, or for emergency detection and response.
