In 2024, together with Cetaqua, we launched a project to analyze mobility data and visitor behaviour in Benidorm, a city that multiplies its population in summer and faces strong pressure on its infrastructure. The aim was to explore how mobile data can provide strategic insights to optimize water management and other essential resources. We used Smart Steps, our platform offering aggregated and anonymized Telco data.

Accurate, up-to-date tourism information is key to anticipating demand and planning efficiently. In Benidorm, it helps adjust water supply, improve waste management and strengthen other critical services.

The project focused on understanding tourist profiles, analysing the link between tourism and water use, supporting smart urban planning and promoting more sustainable resource management. It delivered two outputs: detailed datasets for advanced studies and an interactive visual tool for dynamic exploration.

Highlights of the success story

Decision-making based on real, up-to-date data

Cetaqua has access to accurate information on visitor numbers, profiles and behaviour thanks to the analysis of anonymous mobility data. This enables them to make informed strategic decisions, adapt quickly to changes in tourist demand, and plan and optimise resources according to seasonality.

Improving the visitor experience and promoting local development

Municipalities can improve key infrastructure and services by better understanding the needs and behaviour of tourists. This not only enriches the visitor experience, but also boosts the local economy, benefiting commerce, hospitality and employment, and promoting more sustainable tourism with greater added value.

Optimisation of strategies and resources

Cetaqua uses its detailed knowledge of tourist numbers to optimise the management of a vital resource such as water. Anticipating peaks in demand allows it to adjust its planning and reduce pressure on urban infrastructure, ensuring a more efficient, sustainable and resilient service provision during peak seasons.

Historical analysis and detection of tourism patterns

The historical data provided by the Tourism Insights solution allows for accurate characterisation of the evolution of tourism over time. This analysis enables the detection of patterns, trends and strategic opportunities, helping to anticipate future scenarios and design better-informed public policies and business plans.

What they say about us

"Cetaqua developed a project to determine the floating population based on water consumption, and we decided to work with mobile phone data provided by Telefónica in order to have a solid ground truth. The team has been very responsive and has supported us phenomenally, both in preparing the data and in providing context and explanations."
