The Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) is dedicated to research in cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. Among its various research projects, the Gaia Mission consists of a detailed mapping of the Milky Way, including its two billion stars, in a precise three-dimensional map.Telefónica Tech supports the Universitat de Barcelona, thanks to Altostratus Cloud Consulting, our company specialized in multicloud services and Google Cloud Premier Partner, in the provisioning of Google Cloud infrastructures based on a Cloud Foundation. This was carried out from on-premises environments and from supercomputing centers such as BSC, using services such as Virtual Machines and high-performance databases.

Highlights of the success story

End to end support

We support the researchers throughout the process to ensure the successful implementation of the project with teams specialized in Google Cloud services and technologies.

Massive data analysis

The infrastructure deployed enabled massive data processing and analysis in a flexible, scalable and tailored way to the needs required by the researchers.

Optimizing Google Cloud Platform

Our specialized team delivered trainings to achieve ICCUB's AI and analytics training on resources such as Vertex AI and BigQuery.

An interdisciplinary project

The combination of the extraordinary volumes of data, the great computational power and flexibility of cloud infrastructures, combined with data mining techniques allowed the researchers to study holistically the links between past galaxy collisions and star formation.

More agile research

Thanks to this project, ICCUB scientists have a customized computing environment, from high-performance virtual machines to large-scale computing in clusters scalable as needed, in some cases reducing computing time from more than a year to weeks.

What others say about us

"The use of cloud resources has made it possible to exploit our data in a variety of ways that would have been very difficult with classical computing means. And the advice and support of Telefónica Tech has allowed the learning process, "access and use of these resources was quick and efficient."
