Advanced Factories 2024: trends and use cases for industry 5.0

April 11, 2024

After very busy three days we are saying goodbye to Advanced Factories 2024, the professional meeting on innovation, automation, and industrial cyber security, robotics, and digitalized industry that has been held this week at Fira de Barcelona.

In this edition Advanced Factories has explored advances in AI, Cloud and Edge Computing, and new trends and use cases in the industry have been revealed.

Our stand at Advanced Factories 2024.

At the Telefónica Tech stand we showed the digital technologies that allow us to automate business and industrial processes to produce more and better: more efficiently, productively, securely, and sustainably.

Maria Eugenia Borbore (Telefónica) and Darío Cesena (Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech), during the institutional visit to the Telefónica Tech stand.

We have taken part in Advanced Factories 2024 at the...

Round table: " Digitalization as a key element to ensure productivity and sustainability in the automotive sector "

Darío Cesena, (Geprom part of Telefónica Tech) and Diego Galar (European Federation of National Maintenance Societie).

Dario Cesena, CEO of Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech, speaking to industry experts on process automation, the use of AI in manufacturing and data analysis, explained that:

The availability of data in real time guarantees immediate decision making in day-to-day production processes.

Analyzing real use cases with customers, Darío believes that “particularly in the automotive industry, due to the complexity and competitiveness of the sector, data becomes a fundamental asset to maximize efficiency and ensure the sustainability of automotive factories.”

Presentation: Migasa use case

Javier Arias (Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech) and José Rodríguez Macías, (Migasa).

This has been a didactic and pleasant talk between Javier Arias, commercial director at Geprom, which is part of Telefónica Tech, and José Rodríguez Macías, assistant to the Technical Management at Migasa, in which they explained the process of integration of the MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management) system in the production process of the agri-food group which produces thousands of tons of olive oils and vegetable oils every year.

The project addressed the challenges and lessons learned during the implementation of the system by our colleagues from Geprom, now also "part of the Migasa team", in the words of Rodríguez Macías.

Round table: “Industrial organizations oriented to the use of data. Data as a key element in the company's strategy”

Marta Serrano (Acciona Energía), Julia Díaz (Repsol) and Juan Manuel Ferrer (Telefónica Tech).

Juan Manuel Ferrer, Business Development Manager Industry 4.0 at Telefónica Tech moderated this round table in which industrial experiences were shared. These experiences, thanks to data, have improved their processes to achieve significant savings in terms of economy, energy, time, and resources.

Round table: “Cyber security in smart plants: how to protect our industrial infrastructures”

Sergi Gil López, Industrial Cyber Security & GRC consultant at Govertis, part of Telefónica Tech, emphasized the need to protect industrial systems against cyber threats.

Sergi Gil (Govertis, parte de Telefónica Tech),

Sergi Gil López Industrial Cyber Security & GRC consultant at Govertis, part of Telefónica Tech.

We usually find that the IT part is protected, but the OT part is not. It is often forgotten.

Sergi explained that “in industrial plants we find remote systems uncontrolled. Facility maintenance can also be an entry point for threats.”

This requires integrated and robust Industrial Cyber Security solutions that include both hardware and software protection, and the effective segregation of critical networks and systems to minimize the chances of unauthorized access and limit the potential damage in the event of a security breach.

Functional demo of our technologies for Industry 5.0

Together with our colleagues from Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech, we built the functional demo of a digitalized Industry 5.0 factory that was installed at our stand at Advanced Factories 2024.

KUKA industrial robot is key to automated manufacturing process in Smart Industry 5.0 demo

KUKA industrial robot is key to automated manufacturing process in Smart Industry 5.0 demo.

Through this demo we displayed our capabilities and technologies applied to the industrial and productive sectors and explained to visitors how the integration of technologies such as Cyber Security, Cloud, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Blockchain is transforming the industry, making it more competitive and resilient.

The manufacturing process, as an example, produced personalized key rings with Telefónica's logo and the identity of our Centennial, in addition to a QR code that allows verifying the authenticity of the product and tracking its manufacturing process through Blockchain. For this purpose, several technologies are used, such as industrial and collaborative robots, artificial vision cameras, management and control systems, and a digital control tower based on the Legato platform.

The digital control tower is a platform that sits on top of all plant operating systems, designed to integrate all the information collected in the different layers (PLC systems, SCADA, MES systems, Business, external information, etc.) and represent it in an agile and visual way for the use of different profiles within an organization.

Its main objective is to have all the information of a factory, regardless of its origin, in a single interface and allow different users to make strategic decisions through the transparency of processes and complex interactions between different parameters.

In this expanded installation, the demo makes use of 5G technologies for connectivity, MES (Manufacturing Execution System), WMS (Warehouse Management System) and AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robots) for the management of storage and logistics.

Maria Eugenia Borbore (Telefónica) and Darío Cesena (Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech) explaining the Smart Industry 5.0 demo at Advanced Factories 2024.

The demo was structured in five different use cases, highlighting applications such as warehouse management, print area, OT cyber security and in robots, visualization in digital twin and verification with Blockchain. Each of these use cases proves the tangible benefits of implementing advanced technologies in terms of efficiency, security, productivity, and sustainability.
