Lady Tech: María Loza ensures privacy and security
Telefónica Tech's #LadyHacker prove every day with their work that progress has no gender.
Who are you and what do you do?
I am María Loza Corera, Lead Legal Advisor at Govertis, part of Telefónica Tech, and responsible for the Emerging Technologies Competency Center.
We advise our customers on privacy and security issues, helping them to design and implement projects that comply with all regulatory requirements, especially in new regulatory frameworks that are emerging, such as the proposed Artificial Intelligence regulation.
How would you describe your career path so far and what are the skills you use at Govertis, part of Telefónica Tech?
I started out as a candidate for the judiciary and when I left after two years. Thanks to a European research grant, I entered fully into this specialty and, from then on, I have been linked to this world of technology, both from a practical and academic point of view.
About the skills I use, based always on rigor, trying to find a practical solution to problems, using creativity, critical thinking, empathy and promoting teamwork.
We all have unique qualities and when they come together in a team, incredible things happen. A big shout out to my teammates at Govertis, the best team ever.
What do you see as the specific challenges women face in IT and how have you overcome those challenges?
Possibly the same as in any other field (equal opportunities, salary, etc.), because women no longer give up a career and this has been hard and difficult to implement in society and in all sectors, but it is evolving in a very positive way. Regarding how I have overcome these challenges, working.

How would you describe the evolution of opportunities for women in technology?
I think technology has revolutionized and is currently revolutionizing the way we live and also the way we work. Every day new opportunities and careers are emerging around technology. I remember more than twenty years ago when technology law was not even considered a specialty and there were very few of us who were dedicated to this field.
It is now an essential discipline and of great importance in the world in which we live and, above all, the world we are heading towards, since the balance between technological development and respect for our fundamental rights must be guaranteed.
What do you consider to be the greatest achievement or project you have worked on so far and how did your perspective as a woman influence its development?
I hope my greatest achievement is yet to come 😊, but basically, for me, achievements are all those projects in which you contribute from their design to their materialization and implementation or those complex cases in which you achieve a satisfactory and viable solution for the customer or the archiving of a sanctioning procedure or lawsuit.
I don't know how my perspective as a woman can influence a project. I just do my best.
How do you balance your professional life with your personal responsibilities, and what advice do you have for women in similar situations?
I admit that this is something I am trying to get better at every day, so I am not the best person to give advice on this point. I try to dedicate quality time to my loved ones, time to take care of myself and find the balance between everything.
What would you say to a 20-year-old María?
Rely on your intuition and be true to your principles.
